Gail Rieke’s Zoom: Travel Journal Assemblage exhibition now open at MIA

Suitcase journals celebrate national and international travel adventures

Internationally renowned artist Gail Rieke’s latest exhibition ZOOM: TRAVEL JOURNAL ASSEMBLAGE is now on display at Miami International Airport’s South Terminal Gallery. ZOOM: TRAVEL JOURNAL ASSEMBLAGE consists of two assemblage travel journal suitcases, Serendipity Japan (2008-2009) and France Journal (2010-2017). Both are part of a broader work called Suitcase Wall, a large installation wall at the studio/gallery in the artist’s home. Gail Rieke’s travel journals feature handmade materials, combined with manufactured items and preformed natural objects often found during the artist’s travels.

Each journal is a time machine that can transport both the maker and viewer to specific experiences through multifaceted inventions of drawing, writing, photography, collage and bookmaking. My challenge is to translate this diversity into a formal, cohesive whole.
Gail Rieke

Rieke is an internationally recognized collage/assemblage/installation artist and teacher who lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico with her husband, painter Zachariah Rieke. She travels nationally and internationally to lecture, teach workshops and experience other cultures. Her suitcase travel journals are in-depth responses to these adventures.

ZOOM: TRAVEL JOURNAL ASSEMBLAGE is a dynamic collection of journals that celebrates the artist’s travels around the world, and in turn, celebrates travel in general. As the third-busiest U.S. airport for international passengers, our hope is that the exhibit entertains and inspires the millions of passengers we serve annually.
Gendry Sherer, MIA Fine Arts and Cultural Affairs Director

The ZOOM: TRAVEL JOURNAL ASSEMBLAGE exhibition, on display until September, continues the primary mission of the Aviation Department’s Fine Arts and Cultural Affairs Division to humanize and enrich the airport environment through the commission of contemporary artwork and the presentation of exhibitions in various media that communicate culture, environment and art resources of an international scope.
