MIA Galleries Recent Acquisitions opens for Miami Art Week

Exhibition features works purchased by airport from 14 local visual artists

Miami International Airport supported the local arts ecosystem during the pandemic by developing an acquisitions initiative to purchase two-dimensional existing works from 14 Miami-Dade artists and feature them in MIA Galleries Recent Acquisitions, a new exhibition that opened just before Miami Art Week at the airport’s Gate D31 Gallery. It is scheduled to be on display through August 2022.

The artists featured in this exhibition include: Addonis Parker; Amalia Caputo; Annick Duvivier; Cara Despain; Carol Jazzar; Christina Pettersson; Ian Patrick O’Connor; Luján Candria; Maria Theresa Barbist; Monica López de Victoria; Najja Moon; Regina Jestrow; Silvia Ros; and Tom Virgin. In addition, a selection of letter prints by the latter artist features artwork created by local visual artists, such as Adler Guerrier, Michelle Weinberg, Laura Tan, and Pip Brant.

I applaud MIA for supporting our local arts community, which has also been recovering from the economic downturn of the pandemic. This new exhibition is giving many of our extremely gifted artists the opportunity to showcase their work before the diverse international audience that only MIA can provide.
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava

The exhibition includes paintings, photographs, and works on paper created between 2017– 2020 that contemplate the beauty and precariousness of our local landscape and our natural resources. Some of these works focus on current demographics, identity, and societal concerns. Works were chosen during a rigorous selection process by a six-person panel comprised of local art and museum professionals, including curators and public art program administrators. The jurors, in MIA’s first-ever call to artists announced in July 2020, reviewed over 250 submissions.

We are proud to divide our funding among multiple working artists from our community, at a time when there are less opportunities. The Recent Acquisitions exhibition is also the latest way that we get to share with our passengers the immense amount of artistic talent that Miami-Dade County has to offer.
