MIA honors its top concessions at third annual awards ceremony

Concessions judged on excellence in customer service, merchandise and menu offerings

Miami International Airport officials recognized their top stores and restaurants, based on excellence in customer service, merchandise and menu offerings, at the airport’s Third Annual Concession of the Year Awards Ceremony on January 24.

From 22 nominations out of more than 200 retail and dining locations at MIA, the final winners by gross revenue were:

Small Concessionaire of the Year: Fig & Fennel (Icebox Café)

Medium Concessionaire of the Year: 305 Pizza

Large Concessionaire of the Year: KFC/Taco Bell/Pizza Hut Food Court (Master ConcessionAir)

Overall Concession of the Year: Shoppes at Ocean Drive (Newslink)

The nominees were judged by a three-person panel of industry professionals from Bayside Marketplace, the Greater Miami and the Beaches Hotel Association, and The Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Florida International University. Each concession was judged based on excellence in presentation, retailing and merchandising/menu selection; uniqueness of space/street appeal; sales per square foot; and customer service. The size categories were determined by annual gross revenue, with large category nominees earning $5 million or more, medium category nominees earning $2 million to $5 million, and small category nominees grossing up to $2 million.

Fig and Fennel, a farm-to-table eatery owned by Miami Beach hot spot Icebox Café, and Miami pizza shop 305 Pizza are two of the local small businesses featured in the MIA Marketplace - a string of iconic brands and local vendors in the center of Concourse D that provide a slice of South Florida culture. The KFC/Taco Bell/Pizza Hut Food Court, which opened in 2016, is located at the pre-security connection between concourses D and E. The Shoppes at Ocean Drive®, encompassing nearly 10,000 square feet located near Gate D17, offers travelers a high-end shopping mall experience with multiple specialty brands under one roof.

As a whole, MIA’s concessions achieved the highest score among all mega airports (32.5 million or more annual passengers) in the J.D. Power 2017 North America Airport Satisfaction Study.

Congratulations to each of this year’s winners, for demonstrating their exemplary commitment to customer satisfaction. Second to our airline partners, our concessions arguably make the largest and most lasting impression on our customers. These award-winning concessions play an important role in our mission of becoming a leading global gateway.
