MIA ranked as top U.S. airport for international route growth

In the last 12 months, Miami International Airport had the largest gain of new international routes among all U.S. airports, according to a study performed by industry analyst Airline Network News and Analysis ( The results were announced as part of’s 2017 U.S. ANNIES airport awards, which recognizes airports for how they have developed their networks and their carrier base over a one-year period. MIA tied with Los Angeles International Airport for top place in the U.S., with a net gain of 10 new international routes between May 2016 and May 2017.

MIA’s network growth included several new routes to Europe, including: Berlin (previously a winter-only seasonal route by low-cost carrier airberlin); Cologne, Germany (by low-cost carrier Eurowings); Copenhagen, Denmark and Oslo, Norway (both with SAS); and Reykjavik, Iceland (by low-cost carrier WOW air). American Airlines also began scheduled service at MIA to six destinations in Cuba at the end of 2016.

The second half of 2017 will include at least four new international non-stop routes at MIA, with the following launches already announced: BVI Airways will begin MIA’s first-ever service to Tortola, British Virgin Islands on July 22, with two weekly flights; Aer Lingus will launch three weekly flights to Dublin, Ireland on September 1; SAS will begin weekly service to Stockholm, Sweden on October 29; and EL AL Israel Airlines will begin three weekly flights to Tel Aviv on November 1.

We are proud to be recognized for our international route growth, and particularly for our expansion into new markets throughout Europe and the Middle East. With more flights to Latin America and the Caribbean than any other U.S. airport, MIA continues to attract a diverse mix of airlines from around the world.
