Multimedia artist immerses travelers into her Techno-Tropical world
Miami native’s optical illusions are now showing at MIA’s moving images wall
Miami multimedia artist Monica López De Victoria – renowned for her distinct aesthetic that fuses the pastel hues and geometric motifs of Miami’s Art Deco architecture with the layered vibrancy of digital culture and tropical environments – is taking travelers at Miami International Airport on a deep dive of her work with Techno-Tropical, an exhibition on display until November 1 at MIA’s moving images (MIAmi) video art wall near gate J7. The exhibition includes five of Lopez De Victoria’s video works from 2019 to 2024, flowing seamlessly between choreography, memory, color, and the fluid landscapes of water.
We’re thrilled to feature Monica López De Victoria’s captivating artwork at MIA, offering travelers from around the world another window into the extraordinary talent found in our community. Techno-Tropical also provides passengers with a moment to pause and reflect on the ways water connects and sustains us all. During their journey, this exhibition immerses them in the waves of motion, reflection, and creativity that shape South Florida’s landscape. This is yet another way we welcome and celebrate our travelers—uplifting them through dynamic and diverse exhibitions.
The screening features the artist’s vibrant, Bauhaus-inspired Chromacasting (2018), a visual symphony of synchronized swimming and color created during her residency in Dessau, Germany, and the dreamlike Ripples Surfacing – Touch (2019), which captures the hopes and vulnerabilities of Korea’s young artistic swimmers, unraveling the intimate bonds between water and identity. Currents (2025), a site-specific video installation celebrating how water connects those who live and travel throughout Miami-Dade County and commissioned for Miami-Dade County’s Art in Public Places collection, celebrates the community’s diverse journeys and the ever-changing tides of home. ///HEAT///WAVE/// (2024) transforms the gestures of two hands (those of the artist and her husband) into an abstract meditation on relationship and presence. In ~~~spinning~~~ (2021), underwater movement, optical illusions, and rippling light evoke the suspended isolation and emotional resilience of the pandemic era, culminating in a poignant release.
Miami International Airport's moving images (MIAmi) aims to engage travelers with a vibrant video arts program featuring experimental films, short documentaries, animated shorts, and dance-on-film created by filmmakers and contemporary artists working in film and video.
Monica López De Victoria, a Puerto Rican and Swedish American native of Miami, is a multi-disciplinary artist, educator, professional performer in artistic (synchronized) swimming, and collaborator in the experimental sibling duo TM Sisters. Her work investigates the rippling healing effects of overlapping movement, emotional volume, and the aesthetics of her home: Miami. Her practice spans large-scale optical installations, video projection mapping, aquatic performance, sculptural textiles, and interactive digital extended reality, flowing together to create immersive environments that reveal unseen geometries of human relationships and supernatural illusions around us. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from Florida International University.
