American Airlines launches first-ever Miami-Tulum route

American Airlines made history on March 28 as the first U.S. airline to touch down at the recently opened Tulum International Airport (TQO) when it launched service from Miami International Airport and two other U.S. hubs on the first day of international operations at TQO. Tulum is American’s third new international destination inaugurated from MIA this year and gives the airport a total of seven Mexican routes – its most ever.

We continue to strengthen Miami as American’s largest international gateway – offering our customers direct and unparalleled access to Mexico, the Caribbean, and Latin America (MCLA).  New service to Tulum joins our lineup of six destinations in Mexico, including Merida, Monterrey, Cozumel, Cancun, and Mexico City. Our continued growth is a testament to American’s commitment as Miami’s Hometown Airline.

Juan Carlos Liscano, American’s Vice President of MIA Hub Operations.

Service from MIA to Tulum will operate daily year-round, providing customers direct and convenient access to the ancient ruins, picturesque landscapes, and white sand beaches of this Mexican paradise. The flight will operate on a Boeing 737-800 aircraft, with seating for 172 passengers.

The Tulum route will complement the 45 other unique destinations American operates in the MCLA region direct from MIA. In February, American also launched new service to Governor’s Harbour, Bahamas, and became the only U.S. airline to offer direct service to Ocho Rios, Jamaica.

Miami International Airport, America’s busiest airport for international freight and the second busiest for international passengers, is receiving an unprecedented investment of $7 billion in capital improvements and $1.7 billion in maintenance upgrades. MIA offers more flights to Latin America and the Caribbean than any other U.S. airport and is also the leading economic engine for Miami-Dade County and the state of Florida, generating business revenue of $31.9 billion and approximately 60 percent of all international visitors to Florida annually.
