Photographer Maritza Caneca’s Pools makes a splash

New exhibition takes passengers for a lap around swimming pools across the globe

Brazilian artist and current Miami resident Maritza Caneca’s fascination with photographing swimming pools has taken her around the world - from her hometown of Rio de Janeiro to Budapest, London and Miami - and now she’s sharing her Olympic-sized journey with passengers at Miami International Airport. Pools, an exhibition of her stunning work, is now on display through Spring 2021 at MIA’s CameraWorks Gallery, located at gates D22 and D25.

Through her photographs, Caneca communicates the nostalgia she felt in 2012 when she witnessed the abandoned pool at her grandparents’ summer ranch. Since that pivotal moment, she has become obsessed with the nature of pools.

Caneca's artistic practice is driven by three decades as a cinematographer. Inspired by her early work, she is in continuous search for symmetry, focusing on natural and human-made patterns. Her photographs compile repetitive pools and forms, always looking for a unique angle and the memories that once filled these spaces. Her artwork is clad in geometric tendencies translated through her unique cinematic point of view.

We are thrilled to present these captivating and stunningly composed photographs from Maritza Caneca’s expansive Pool series. We hope they delight and immerse travelers and international visitors with studied poetic compositions of light and geometry that bring stillness and respite.

Caneca has exhibited at leading galleries, organizations and art fairs in Brazil, New York, Rio de Janeiro, Budapest, Denmark and Switzerland, and has been commissioned for public art installations such as the iconic Copacabana Palace Pool project.

In 2016, Caneca was invited to exhibit her work at the renowned Paço Imperial, with an exhibition curated by Vanda Klabin, that took place during the Olympics in Rio. In the summer of 2019, her work was part of Photographic Visions 2019 at PH21 Contemporary Photography Gallery in Budapest. Caneca lives and works in Miami, where she has a studio at the Bakehouse Art Complex.
